The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays to decorate for. Red, white, and blue are such a beautiful color combination, and when you approach them with a farmhouse sensibility — natural textures, simple arrangements, vintage touches — the result is festive without feeling kitschy.

The Porch

The porch is where Fourth of July decorating really shines. I start with a patriotic wreath on the front door — mine is made from a grapevine base with red, white, and blue ribbon, dried flowers, and a few small flags tucked in. On the porch itself: red and white striped throw pillows, a galvanized bucket filled with red, white, and blue flowers, small American flags in a terracotta pot, and a simple banner or bunting along the porch railing.

The garden provides the most beautiful Fourth of July decorations. In early July I can usually find red zinnias, geraniums, and red salvia; white zinnias, daisies, and Queen Anne's lace; and blue salvia, delphinium, and bachelor's buttons. A loose arrangement of red, white, and blue flowers in a mason jar or galvanized bucket is the most beautiful and natural-looking patriotic decoration you can make.

The Table

For a Fourth of July table, I keep it simple and festive: a red and white striped tablecloth, blue napkins tied with twine, a centerpiece of red, white, and blue flowers, mason jars as glasses, and small flags as place markers. For an outdoor table, add citronella candles in mason jars to keep the bugs away while adding to the ambiance.

Simple DIY Ideas

Painted mason jars: Paint mason jars in red, white, and blue and use them as vases, candle holders, or utensil holders. Flag bunting: Cut triangles from red, white, and blue fabric and string them on twine. Patriotic wreath: A simple grapevine wreath with red, white, and blue ribbon and a few small flags is easy to make and looks wonderful.

Keeping It Farmhouse

The key to farmhouse Fourth of July decorating is restraint and natural materials. A few well-chosen pieces look more beautiful than a lot of plastic decorations. Stick to natural materials — wood, galvanized metal, linen, cotton — and let the red, white, and blue color palette do the work. Happy Fourth of July!
