When I first got chickens, I thought a coop was just a coop — a functional structure to keep the birds safe and dry. But over time I've come to see it as an extension of the farmhouse aesthetic, and I've had a lot of fun making ours as charming as possible.

The good news is that a little paint and a few simple additions can transform even the most basic coop into something that looks like it belongs on a postcard.

Start with Paint

Paint is the single most impactful thing you can do for a chicken coop. A fresh coat of paint in a color that complements your house makes the coop look intentional rather than utilitarian. I painted ours a deep barn red with white trim — classic and timeless. Other beautiful options include sage green with white trim, black with white trim (very striking), soft gray with a pop of color on the door, or white with black hardware. Use exterior paint and apply at least two coats for durability.

Add a Window Box

A window box overflowing with flowers is one of the most charming additions to any coop. Plant it with marigolds (which also help deter pests), petunias, or trailing nasturtiums. The chickens will appreciate the shade and you'll love how it looks.

Hang a Cute Sign

A hand-painted or carved wooden sign adds personality. "The Hen House," "Fresh Eggs Daily," "Cluck Around and Find Out" — whatever makes you smile. You can find these at craft fairs, on Etsy, or make your own with a piece of reclaimed wood and some paint.

Use Reclaimed Materials

Reclaimed wood, old windows, vintage hardware — these materials give a coop instant character. An old window repurposed as a coop window, a salvaged door with original hardware, or a weathervane on the roof all add charm without a big investment.

Create a Welcoming Run

The chicken run doesn't have to be an eyesore. Line the perimeter with flowering shrubs or climbing roses (on the outside of the fence, of course). Add a few stepping stones leading to the coop door. Plant a small herb garden nearby — the chickens will love the trimmings and you'll love the convenience.

Functional Decorating Inside

Inside the coop, function and charm can coexist. Paint the interior walls white to brighten the space and make it easier to spot mites. Use decorative hooks for hanging feeders and waterers. Add a small chalkboard to track egg counts or note when you last cleaned. Line the nesting boxes with fresh lavender — it smells wonderful and has natural calming properties.

The Finishing Touches

A small weather vane on the roof, a vintage egg basket hanging by the door, a simple garden gate at the run entrance, and solar lights along the path to the coop all add up to something truly special. Your chickens don't care how the coop looks, of course. But you'll walk out there every morning to collect eggs, and it's so much nicer to do that in a space that makes you smile.
